These fore fathers (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln) are celebrated for their early contributions of preserving the U.S. and expanding its territory. This giant memorial is highly controversial as it is was carved onto a mountain known to the Lakota tribe as Six Grandfathers. The mountain was seized from the Lakota's after the great Sioux War of 1876 even though it had previously been granted to them in the Treaty of Laramie in 1868. The Three Indians on the Right (Sitting Bull, Young Joseph and Three Eagles) are best known for their accomplishments and efforts in leading their bands through the extremely turbulent period of history where they were being forcibly removed from their ancestral lands. The larger bold image of Chief Joseph on the left depicts an image of Joseph when he is much older and the way he is largely remembered and recognized. It was during this time that Joseph became legendary as a humanitarian and a peacemaker while negotiating on behalf of himself and his tribe. Oakley developed hunting skills as a child, in order to provide for her impoverished family in western Ohio. At fifteen, she won a shooting contest against experienced marksman Frank E. Butler, whom she later married. The two of them joined Buffalo Bill in 1885, performing in Europe before royalty and other heads of state. Audiences were astounded to see her shooting-out a cigar from her husband's lips or splitting a playing-card edge-on at 30 paces, and she earned more than anyone except Buffalo Bill himself. After this, his fellow warriors would yell “Sitting Bull, I am he” to intimidate their adversaries. • He was the first man to become chief of the entire Lakota Sioux Nation. • He was a holy man and was believed to have powers of prophecy and spiritual insight. During a trance Sitting Bull reported seeing soldiers tumbling into his camp like grasshoppers. Shortly there after his tribe of warriors claimed the lives of Colonel Custer and over 200 soldiers during the Battle of Little Bighorn. • After the embarrassment at Little Bighorn the army was determined to defeat the Plains Indians and force them into exile. Sitting Bull refused to submit and led his followers into Canada where they spent the next four years in exile. • Years after his surrender Sitting Bull was hailed as a minor celebrity rather than the outlaw he was once branded as. He toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. During his travels he met Annie Oakley. He nicknamed her “Little Sure shot” and unofficially adopted her as his daughter. To seal the arrangement he supposedly gifted her the moccasins that he wore during the battle of Little Bighorn. • He was killed over his involvement with the “Ghost Dance Movement”. This was a movement that spoke to a messiah that would supposedly bury the white man’s world under a layer of soil and allow the Indians to return to their old ways. This frightened the authorities and a party of Lakota policeman was dispatched to arrest Sitting Bull and bring him in for questioning. The commotion caused a group of his followers to converge on the scene. A shot was fired and during the confusion over a dozen people were killed including Sitting Bull who was shot in the chest and the head. • The location of his gravesite is still debated today. Two days after his death Sitting Bull’s body was unceremoniously buried at Fort Yates, North Dakota. There it remained for over 60 years until a descendant and his party secretly removed the body and moved it to Mobridge, South Dakota. It is rumored that the descendant and his party may have dug up and transported the wrong body at that time. Shortly there after his tribe of warriors claimed the lives of Colonel Custer and over 200 soldiers during the Battle of Little Bighorn. • After the embarrassment at Little Bighorn the army was determined to defeat the Plains Indians and force them into exile. Sitting Bull refused to submit and led his followers into Canada where they spent the next four years in exile. • Years after his surrender Sitting Bull was hailed as a minor celebrity rather than the outlaw he was once branded as. He toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. During his travels he met Annie Oakley. He nicknamed her “Little Sure shot” and unofficially adopted her as his daughter. To seal the arrangement he supposedly gifted her the moccasins that he wore during the battle of Little Bighorn. • He was killed over his involvement with the “Ghost Dance Movement”. This was a movement that spoke to a messiah that would supposedly bury the white man’s world under a layer of soil and allow the Indians to return to their old ways. This frightened the authorities and a party of Lakota policeman was dispatched to arrest Sitting Bull and bring him in for questioning. The commotion caused a group of his followers to converge on the scene. A shot was fired and during the confusion over a dozen people were killed including Sitting Bull who was shot in the chest and the head. • The location of his gravesite is still debated today. Two days after his death Sitting Bull’s body was unceremoniously buried at Fort Yates, North Dakota. There it remained for over 60 years until a descendant and his party secretly removed the body and moved it to Mobridge, South Dakota. It is rumored that the descendant and his party may have dug up and transported the wrong body at that time. At a young age he dreamed of becoming first a warrior and then, perhaps, a chief. Before that could happen, though, by the customs and religion of his people, he had to fast, seek a vision, and find his "medicine". Throughout his life, Medicine Crow seemed able to see into the future, often into the very distant future. It was because of his dreams, and the fact that his people saw his seemingly impossible visions come to pass, that he was revered as a visionary medicine man. (He did not attempt to heal wounds or sickness.) On one occasion, the young seeker "saw" something black with round legs puffing smoke and pulling boxlike objects behind it coming down the Valley of Chieftains (the Little Bighorn River). Together, the Duke and his Colt Peacemaker presented an image that bespoke of the Old West. Early on, the Duke learned how to twirl, perform a fast draw, fan and generally handle his Colt SAA with complete skill and ease. He took part in the Battle of Little Bighorn and a number of other battles against the United States Army. Two Moons inevitably surrendered during battle in 1877 and was later appointed head Chief of the Cheyenne Northern Reservation. He traveled on multiple occasions to Washington, D.C. to discuss and fight for the future of the Cheyenne people and to better the conditions that existed on the reservation. They were initially bred to withstand intemperate conditions and have been described as having a similar tolerance to cold as arctic dwelling caribou and reindeer. It’s been found that the cattle have a clear structure and hierarchy of dominance which reduces aggression and the cows are friendly and playful in nature. This type of cow has been exported to many parts of the world, “Gus” resides just 13 miles south of me in Bellevue, Idaho. The most detailed and laborious part of my process is creating a hand-cut stencil using a heavyweight paper and Xacto knife. It was this location that helped establish the image of "the American west" in the minds of the rest of the world. They may grow their first side arm around 75–100 years of age, but some never grow any arms. Arms are developed to increase the plant's reproductive capacity, as they lead to more flowers and fruit. A saguaro can absorb and store considerable amounts of rainwater, visibly expanding in the process, while slowly using the stored water as needed. However, as their habitat gradually transitioned into grass and fields their diets adapted. As part of this adaptation, their teeth and digestive system changed considerably. To be able to flee from predators, their legs also got longer, which in turn increased neck length. I was chosen for this project after a call for artists for the Ketchum Innovation Center (KIC). The center’s mission is to aid local entrepreneurs in business startup. In alignment with the KIC, Flight is based on a proverb about the old wise owl. The open wings symbolize a welcoming nature to outsiders and entrepreneurs. This large wall was very attractive as a mural location with its view from the I-5 and because of its optimal view I was able to put together an art grant with the city of Portland and bring in renowned muralist, David Flores. I was honored to be hired as David’s assistant for the project and we were able to complete the project in under a week.
