Coup Counters depicts Atsina warriors of the Great Plains carrying coup sticks - symbols of courage, honor, and distinction. In battle, the highest mark of bravery was to “count coup”: touching an enemy with the stick and escaping unharmed, demonstrating courage, skill, and self-control. Each successful coup increased a warrior’s prestige and could be commemorated with markings or feathers added to the stick. The painting captures a quiet, gentle moment, yet the symbolism is fierce and powerful.
